Anti-Corruption Joint Action Event

Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) in collaboration with Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), invite KAM members to attend a half-day event on Anti-Corruption on March 10, 2010 at Hotel Intercontinental, from 8.00 am to 1.45pm.
The event dubbed “Calling Businesses To Take Action Against Corruption” will: Take stock of the status of anti-corruption efforts in Kenya; Explore ways on how the private and public sectors can collaborate in the fight against corruption; and to provide a forum for the exchange of information and elaborate on best practices in a bid to strengthen oversight, transparency and accountability among Kenyan businesses.
Topics to be covered include:-
• Why Business Must Address Corruption in Kenya
• Status of Anti-corruption initiatives
• Governance & Ethics Issues: Conducting and Operating Business in High Risk Areas
• Ethics Management and Corruption Prevention: Drawing lessons from other African Countries
• How to minimise Business Risk Through a culture of ethics within the organization: Domesticating a code of ethics and value system to govern public and private sector business dealings; establishing monitoring mechanisms, rewards and sanctions
• Anti-corruption Measures & Resource Kit: Opportunities for businesses to fight corruption (Case studies on guidelines, principles, practices, codes of conduct and available training opportunities)
The Event will aim to:-
Initiate a Collective Action for businesses to deal with systemic and petty corruption rather than blame government systems;
Develop a mechanism that encourages businesses to report corruption cases including extortion and petty bribes;
Initiate and encourage voluntary transparency in public procurement and business transactions as a way to restrict corruption;
Encourage businesses to take a stand and speak out against corrupt dealings and scandals;
Develop and domesticate appropriate short and mid-term approaches to fighting corruption e.g. code of conduct, value system, independent monitoring and internal sanctions;
Adopt long-term approaches to address corruption e.g. use internationally binding agreements, strengthen institutional and regulatory frameworks.
